Mouse Blotter
That's by analogy with "Police Blotter."
I still use, and prefer, an old-fashioned electromechanical mouse with this machine. I find that it works best if I stack up three or four sheets of good heavy bond paper under it as a mouse pad. That seems to give the mouse ball just the right amount of traction so that I can move the pointer precisely on the screen.
What's even better, is that I have a piece of paper ready to hand, right under my mouse, if I feel like writing down random thoughts before I forget them. I have a big stack of former 8.5x11 mouse-pad pieces of paper, with all sorts of things written upon them. When they get wrinkled or something and the mouse doesn't work so well anymore, I just turn over a new leaf. I recommend this system to all.
It helps to keep our mouse balls clean, too.

fastrichard, I'll get back to you Real Soon Now. I do love me some Cox motors.
Always nice to have clean mouse balls, especially when it is done without having to lift the tail oneself... more sanitary that way.
