P.s. I was eating vegetables flavored with bacon when I wrote the above post.
Somebody posted a link to the GoogleBooks scan of the U.S Army 1910 Cooks' Manual at Jerry Pournelle's site, which link leads, after some clicking,
to the orginal U.S. Army SOS recipe, as well as verifying that bacon grease is just as good as olive oil in salad dressing, if not maybe better.
