More's the pity, too. All the sci-fi writers most of we smartasses grew up with never envisioned the evil wet blanket of politics when it came to space exploration. All of them, Jules Verne to Van Vogt, all have believed and written that man would see the intense opportunity to advance the species, and naturally go from one advancement in technology to the other until we were able to reach the stars.
